The Kiso forest is full of life’s cycles.
The roots of the Kiso-Hinoki trees used for lumber haven’t been excavated—rather, they were left untouched for over 100 years. On the stumps, covered with moss seemingly out of nowhere, seeds scatter from the towering adult trees, leading to small, new life sprouting below. At first glance, it seems as if the older trees are dead. Yet they can transport water from the ground upwards to nourish the young hinoki trees, and watch over them as they age. Once their duty is done, they quietly return to the soil themselves.
On the other hand, the young hinoki buds which have been passed the gift of life will aim at the heavens, rising ram-rod straight and tall, while having to battle harsh natural conditions. How long will it take for these young trees to fully grow? Yet it’s this far-off time that becomes embedded as a delicate tree ring of the Kiso-Hinoki, year after year, creating an inimitable beauty.
